Blooming Yellow Trout Lily
Apr 22
Yellow Trout Lily (Erythronium americanum) is native to North America and one of the earliest of the Spring ephemeral wildflowers. Typically it blooms (March/April). It takes 4-7 years to go from seed to flower, and spreads by way of bulbs and offsets, and forms large patches. It's Deer resistant as it doesn't taste good, but it does attract bees. Though edible in small quantities, it can be an emetic which is enough of a possibility that I tend to avoid them. Reportedly a tea made of the root can help with fever, and poultices of the root may have wound healing benefits according to some folk traditions. Personally, I'll stick to Neosporin, unless it's urgent. ;-)
